What happens after death

When we die one of two things happens to us. According to the Bible we go to be with the Lord or we face eternal judgement, i.e. we go to heaven or hell. It is that simple. If you have trusted in Jesus as your Saviour, then all of your sins will be forgiven, and when you die, you will be delivered from God's righteous judgement because your sins have been removed (Ephesians 2:8; Colossians 2:13-14). Sin is breaking the law of God (1 John 3:4). It separates us from God (Isaiah 59:2) and brings us death (Romans 6:23). But only through Jesus can we be forgiven. Only through Jesus can we go to heaven. Acts 4:12 says, "Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved."

There is debate within Christianity about the immediacy of judgement and the final abode time-wise following earthly death. But the final destinations are very clear. Heaven and hell are the dwelling place of God and the dwelling place of the condemned, respectively. The Bible tells us clearly that the final abode of those who have been saved by trusting in the sacrifice of Christ will end up in the presence of God in heaven and those who have not trusted in Christ will end up outside of the presence of God in hell.

No second chance

Some people think that we will get a second chance in the afterlife, that God is merciful and kind and only the truly wicked and evil people will be punished. But such well intended sentiment does not make it true. There is no second chance.

Hebrews 9:27, "Just as man is destined to die once, and after that to face judgement."

The Bible tells us that after we die there is judgement. If you do not have Jesus as your Saviour, then you will face a terrible judgement of God. But if you have trusted in Him and what He did on the cross, then you'll pass out of that judgement and into salvation. In other words, you will be allowed to dwell with God forever.

Believers are born twice and die once. The first birth and first death are physical. The second birth is spiritual and brings eternal blessing. Unbelievers are born once and die twice. The first birth and first death are physical. The second death is spiritual and brings eternal torment.

It is appropriate to be concerned about what happens to us after we die. After all, eternity is an awful long time to be wrong! We should be concerned about the greater part of our existence; that part that continues on after our physical bodies have failed us and we take our last breath. It will happen to all of us unless the Lord returns before then. Now is the time to choose wisely. Choose LIFE!
